The shrimp fleet at Port Isabel was only small day boats that stayed in bay until after WWII. Then Louisiana shrimpers looking for better harvest came to Port Isabel. Early off shore shrimpers like this one I created from historical descriptions were only 35 to 40 feet.Today the future of shrimping is not clear. Mexico has banned American shrimpers, competition from shrimp farms, and high costs make the future unclear. But shrimping certainly contributed to Rio Grande Valley growth in the 20th century.
